Galle is as much a district as a city, located just 119km southwards of Colombo and rich in coastal, cultural and historical aspects. Really, it’s so much that recreational package you look to indulge yourself in after all the hard work and toil of life, so if a little bit of peace and quiet is what you’re looking for, well, Galle is definitely your answer!
Being one of Sri Lanka’s outermost districts means that Galle borders in on the coast, and so makes the area literally quite packed with the some of the most beautiful beaches upon the island and an array of coastal encounters. Namely, there is the Hikkaduwa beach; offering you chance to dive into the turquoise waters and witness the allure of the coral reefs, the Unawatuna beach; holding name as the island’s most famous and populous beach, the Mirissa Beach; renowned not just for the sparkling waters but also for whale and dolphin watching. Not to mention the sea turtle hatchery in Hikkaduwa. And of course, there is always so many coastal activities to lose yourself in – like surfing, snorkelling, diving, or sunbathing out amongst the magnificent coconut palms; however you like it!

If you are slightly more inclined towards humanities, here is a piece of information for you; Galle has been declared a UNESCO heritage site, as within its borders lie the remnants of a fortified old city- one that which dates back to the late 16th century. Dubbed the Galle Fort, these vestiges form not just the island’s finest example of Dutch architecture and construction, but also the largest remaining fortress in Asia engineered by any European imperial powers. Walking upon the rocky promontory on which this has been constructed takes you all the way back, gives you a glimpse into the wondrous history that Sri Lanka finds itself rich in.
Other places of interest include the Galle Maritime Museum, Koggala: hometown of Martin Wickramasinghe, who is perhaps the island’s most renowned writer, the Galle Lighthouse, and so many others that which add a sense of cultural essence to the experience. Ambalangoda, should also be a definite stop on your travels, as it is the birthplace of our traditional craft of mask making. You can see samples of these in our souvenirs section, made with care by the hands of such craftsmen; samples that which present to you the talent that had been passed down onto them by their ancestral generations.

With that, well, there is not much more to be said in terms of a conclusion, other than yet another reminder to not overlook Galle during your stay in Sri Lanka; the memories you will collect are bound to last with you a lifetime!!
